Direct Access means that you have the freedom to choose your own physical therapist! Currently, in the state of Maryland, most insurances allow you may be evaluated by a physical therapist without a physician's referral. This means that you are able to begin treatment sooner, and the sooner treatment is received, the sooner you can return to your normal everyday activities.
Many insurance companies now recognize the cost savings and improved access of care that come with direct access and do not require a referral for payment. Keep in mind that your insurance policy may require a visit to the primary care physician first or may limit your access to preferred providers only.
