Gateau Physical Therapy introduces the M.O.G.SM, a medically oriented gym and a first of its kind in Maryland
Your Prescription to Better Health Begins with Exercise
Gateau Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine has been a leader in Southern Maryland's physical therapy industry for over 20 years. Now we are applying our experience and specialized skills to bridge the gap between medicine and fitness with the opening of our first Medically Oriented Gym.
The Medically Oriented Gym (M.O.G.SM) is specifically designed to empower its members and improve lives through fitness, wellness, guidance, and care. With an exceptionally qualified and professional staff on hand, we help patients and members get and/or stay fit, while preventing injuries in a way that no other provider of wellness and fitness can.
The Medically Oriented Gym offers personalized exercise programs based on the client's M.O.G.SM fitness score which is based on a comprehensive assessment. The M.O.G.SM is staffed by Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants, and Exercise Physiologists. Educational and fitness classes are provided, designed for diverse yet distinct groups, including fitness enthusiasts, diabetics, post cancer survivors, senior citizens, post physical therapy patients, and those children and adults fighting obesity. Exercise is also proven to manage fibromyalgia, high blood pressure, and minimize osteoporosis.
Medical Fitness
Complications from obesity related conditions (i.e., diabetes, hypertension, etc.) are often life threatening. With a physician's prescription and the help of the professionals at the Medically Oriented Gym at Gateau Physical Therapy, we can start you on your road to a healthier lifestyle.
Quarterly re-evaluations will be performed with data available to you and your Primary Care Physician. In addition to fitness, the M.O.G. strives to promote a healthy lifestyle. We will therefore host monthly educational seminars on a variety of topics, which will be taught by healthcare professionals. Also, a variety of motivational fitness classes will be available as part of your membership, which will be appropriate for adolescents to seniors.
Simply put, the Medically Oriented Gym provides personalized health and fitness programs, resourceful support systems, and follow-up care--enabling patients and members to integrate healthy, smart decisions and actions into their everyday lives.
Programs
At the M.O.G.SM we have many options for a more intensive exercise program. From one-on-one training with an exercise professional to small group training with your family and friends or entire sports teams, our staff will educate you in proper exercise techniques, nutrition requirements, and how to best adopt a healthy lifestyle.
The programs we offer include:

A M.O.G.SM, or Medically Oriented Gym, is a one-of-a-kind, community based, family-oriented fitness and health facility that bridges the gap between medicine and fitness. The M.O.G.'s vision is to deliver a culture of fitness that is safe, non-intimidating, scientifically based, and will be a valuable part of the member's life. The M.O.G.SM also provides an opportunity for the medically compromised community member or first time exerciser to experience the tremendous benefits from exercise and the commitment to making healthy lifestyle choices.
This will not be a do-it yourself fitness experience! At the M.O.G.SM, you will work with licensed, highly skilled Physical Therapists to receive a complete fitness evaluation, including medical history, activity profile, diet questionnaire, blood pressure, heart and respiratory rates, body weight, body-mass index, waist measurement, and VO2max measurements. You will then be provided with a personalized exercise program based on your condition and experience, receive short and long term health and fitness goals based on your M.O.G. Fitness Evaluation and scientific research. During each visit, our exercise professionals will offer you personal attention and safe programming as they monitor your technique and make continuous adjustments to your program to safely progress you toward your goals.
Exercise is medicine! Everyone from fit to frail would benefit from this highly successful model. Diseases including, but not limited to, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, and metabolic syndrome respond positively to exercise. There is clinical evidence that exercise as part of the prescription can prevent, manage, or lessen the affects of these diseases.
