Mechanical Diagnosis and Treatment (MDT), is a type of physical therapy treatment focused on how the body responds to certain movements or positions to diagnose a problem and ultimately eliminate pain or other symptoms (including tightness, weakness, numbness/tingling, and functional deficits). MDT is a very specific approach to treatment which is tailored based on each individuals response. It is typically very different from traditional therapy as the approach is more patient focused meaning that most of the treatment involves the patient performing exercises vs the therapist performing hands on techniques. This gives the patient more control over how they feel and promotes more patient responsibility and independence with outcomes.
Another hallmark of this type of therapy is the difference in home exercise performance. Traditional PT usually involves a set of exercises to be performed several times/day, however MDT is very specific with approach so there is typically only one exercise the patient performs, but they must perform it throughout the day (the number of sets/day depends on the diagnosis). Probably the best aspect of MDT is that typically the recovery rate is faster than that of traditional therapy. If the patient is consistently seeing a certified practitioner and is compliant with home exercise performance, depending on the issue, they may be symptom free in as little as 3-5 days.Currently we have an MDT certified practitioner working in both our Lusby and California offices.
